Game Recap: Sioux City Bandits beat Salina Liberty in thrilling overtime
Sioux City Bandits (Sioux City, IA) - The Sioux City Bandits outdueled the Salina Liberty in a thrilling 45-39 game on Saturday, March 11th, at the Tyson Events Center that came down to overtime. Both teams were undefeated prior to the matchup, and a share of the CIF league lead was at stake.
Fan-favorite Fred Bruno started the game strong for the Bandits with a touchdown from Tasleem Wilson. As the game progressed, the Liberty took the lead with three straight scores, but the Bandits rallied behind two touchdowns by Drew Prohaska in the second quarter to tie the game going into halftime.
A thrilling second half with back-and-forth scoring from both teams ultimately took the game to overtime with the score knotted at 39. In overtime Bandits star Brandon Sheperd took in his third touchdown of the evening, giving the Bandits a critical six-point advantage. But as overtime ticked away, Salina drove to the Bandits’ one-yard line with only seconds left to play. The game came down to the final play, and the Bandit's defense stood tall as they stuffed Salina quarterback JaVonte Johnson’s sneak attempt, preserving the Bandits’ win and undefeated record.
The Bandits are now atop the standings along with the Gillette Mustangs, as both teams are perfect in league play. The Bandits have a bye this week, then will take on the Mustangs on the road on Saturday, March 25th. They’ll then return home for what is sure to be another thrilling game, this time against the Southwest Kansas Storm at a special time: Friday, March 31st, at 7:00 PM
