Bandits Hold Off Southwest Kansas in Thriller, Secure 49-42 Victory

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — In front of a fired-up crowd at the Tyson Events Center on Military & First Responders Appreciation Night, the Sioux City Bandits delivered one of their biggest wins of the season, defeating the previously 9-0 Southwest Kansas Storm, 49-42, in a back-and-forth battle Saturday night.

The victory moves Sioux City to 6-4 on the season while handing Southwest Kansas just its first loss of the year.

The Bandits struck first before the offense even took the field as kicker Dylan Karnes opened the night with a 50-yard rouge off the opening kickoff to give Sioux City an early 1-0 advantage.

From there, quarterback Lorenzo Brown took over.

Brown was efficient and explosive all night, completing 12-of-14 passes for 164 yards and five touchdowns, while adding the game-winning rushing score late in the fourth quarter. His connection with receivers Fred Bruno and Damond Powell proved to be nearly unstoppable.

Bruno hauled in four catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns, including scoring grabs of 11 and 39 yards, while Powell added three receptions for 59 yards and two touchdowns, highlighted by explosive scoring plays of 29 and 16 yards.

Sioux City jumped out to a quick first-quarter lead when Brown found Bruno for an 11-yard touchdown before immediately answering a Southwest Kansas score with a one-play, 29-yard touchdown strike to Powell, giving the Bandits a 15-6 lead after the opening quarter.

The Storm fought back in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to five after a field goal and short rushing touchdown from quarterback Trae Self, but the Bandits responded again.

Running back Monalo Caldwell capped a key late first-half drive with a six-yard touchdown run, while a successful two-point conversion pass to Jadon Johnson pushed Sioux City ahead 29-16. Southwest Kansas managed a late touchdown before halftime, sending the Bandits into the locker room with a 29-22 advantage.

After Southwest Kansas attempted and recovered an onside kick to open the second half, the Bandits defense stepped up in a critical moment. The Storm failed to capitalize, and Sioux City immediately responded with another quick-strike scoring drive, capped by Brown finding Brandon Sheperd for a 15-yard touchdown.

Southwest Kansas refused to go away.

Behind quarterback Trae Self, who threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns, and playmakers Demarius Washington and Mason Pierce, the Storm continued to chip away and eventually tied the game at 42-42 with 6:47 remaining.

That set the stage for Sioux City’s biggest drive of the night.

Starting in Southwest Kansas territory following a strong return by Jadon Johnson, the Bandits marched 15 yards in four plays. Caldwell ripped off a key 10-yard run before Brown powered his way into the end zone on a three-yard rushing touchdown with 3:25 remaining, putting Sioux City back in front 49-42.

The defense slammed the door shut from there.

After forcing Southwest Kansas into long-yardage situations, Devin Groenhagen came up with a critical late sack, and linebacker Juan Moore intercepted a desperation pass to seal the victory. Sioux City finished with three sacks and two interceptions, forcing key mistakes in crucial moments.

Groenhagen starred defensively, recording 2.5 sacks and three tackles for loss, while Moore added seven total tackles and an interception return of 21 yards. Defensive back Marzion Cosby led the team with eight tackles, and Justin Gilbert added an interception early in the game that helped spark the Bandits offense.

On the ground, Caldwell paced Sioux City with 46 rushing yards and a touchdown, while the Bandits offense maximized its opportunities, scoring 49 points on just 31 offensive plays and averaging 7.5 yards per play.

Despite Southwest Kansas controlling possession for more than 36 minutes, the Bandits made the biggest plays when they mattered most, capitalizing on turnovers and explosive scoring drives to earn a signature victory.

The Bandits now turn their attention to the postseason after knocking off one of the league’s top teams in dramatic fashion at the Tyson Events Center.
