Bandits Fall in Heartbreaker to Rival Omaha Beef, 41-37

The longest-running rivalry in professional indoor football delivered another instant classic Saturday night at the Tyson Events Center — but this one ended in heartbreak for Sioux City.

After leading by 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Sioux City Bandits saw the Omaha Beef score twice in the final 1:36, including the game-winning touchdown with just 37 seconds remaining, to escape Sioux City with a dramatic 41-37 victory.

The loss drops Sioux City to 5-3 on the season, while Omaha improved to 3-5.

The Bandits struck first midway through the opening quarter when Dylan Karnes drilled a 22-yard field goal to cap a steady opening possession and give Sioux City a 3-0 lead. Omaha answered late in the quarter as quarterback V. Espinoza connected with Devanaire Conliffe for a four-yard touchdown pass, though Sioux City kept the deficit to three after blocking the extra point.

Omaha stretched the advantage to 13-3 early in the second quarter after Ivan Corbin punched in a three-yard rushing touchdown, but the Bandits offense quickly came alive behind quarterback Lorenzo Brown.

Brown engineered a quick scoring drive midway through the quarter, finding Jadon Johnson for a two-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 13-10. Moments later, the Bandits capitalized on a key defensive stop when defensive back Marzion Cosby intercepted Espinoza in the end zone for a touchback, setting up one of the biggest plays of the night.

Just two plays later, Brown escaped pressure and connected with Raheem Harvey for a 30-yard touchdown strike, giving Sioux City its first lead since the opening quarter at 17-13 with 1:30 remaining in the half.

Omaha answered quickly, however, as Espinoza once again found Conliffe for an eight-yard touchdown with just 14 seconds left before halftime, sending the Beef into the locker room with a 20-17 edge.

The Bandits reclaimed momentum in the third quarter.

After forcing Omaha to turn the ball over on downs, Brown capped a four-play drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Sheperd, giving Sioux City a 24-20 lead. Omaha countered with another short rushing score from Corbin, but the Bandits responded immediately after a strong kick return by Harvey set up excellent field position.

Brown punched in a one-yard rushing touchdown to put Sioux City back in front, 31-27, entering the fourth quarter.

The Bandits appeared to seize control early in the final frame.

Following another defensive stand, Brown connected with Sheperd for a 30-yard touchdown strike to extend Sioux City’s lead to 37-27 with just over eight minutes remaining. A missed extra point loomed large later, keeping the game within two scores.

Omaha answered with a methodical five-minute drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown pass to Corbin to trim the lead to 37-34 with 1:36 left.

On Sioux City’s ensuing possession, the Beef defense came through with the turning point. Chris Perry intercepted Brown near midfield, giving Omaha the ball in Bandits territory with under a minute remaining.

Espinoza wasted no time, finding Dequan Dudley for a 26-yard touchdown just 20 seconds later to give Omaha its first lead of the second half at 41-37.

Sioux City still had one final chance.

Brown quickly marched the Bandits into Omaha territory, highlighted by a 13-yard completion to Johnson and a scramble that moved the ball inside the 10-yard line. But after a late false start pushed Sioux City back, Omaha held on a final series of incompletions to seal the rivalry win.

Despite the loss, Sioux City outgained Omaha 221-209 in total offense and averaged an impressive 6.9 yards per play. Brown finished 13-of-18 passing for 155 yards and four touchdowns while adding 49 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Sheperd led Bandits receivers with five catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns, while Johnson added six receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Harvey made his presence felt in multiple ways, hauling in a 30-yard touchdown reception while totaling 159 all-purpose yards, including 129 kickoff return yards.

Defensively, Dajon Emory paced Sioux City with six tackles, three tackles for loss, and a sack, while Cosby added an interception that helped swing momentum before halftime.

For Omaha, Espinoza threw for four touchdowns and added 41 rushing yards, while Conliffe hauled in 10 receptions for 89 yards and two scores.

The Bandits now turn their attention to next week’s road matchup against Salina, looking to bounce back after one of the toughest losses of the season.
